Changes to TV and Film

*Interesting Fact*

As you'll see on the clip to the left of this, the UK House of Commons was not allowed to be aired in a satirical way since 1989. The John Oliver clip aired in 2018 and since then the law was investigated and overruled in 2019. The first satirical airing of footage from the UK House of Commons was on The Mash Report in September of 2019. This just goes to show the long history of strict media laws in the UK.

What has now become labeled as one of the top three concerns for media companies in the UK is the result of Brexit taking away citizens' freedom of movement. This freedom allowed citizens to work freely between countries in the EU without the need for a work permit. Media in the UK was heavily dependant on young VFX artists, animators, and post-production workers from the surrounding EU. But ever since this freedom was revoked access to this talent has become troublesome for media companies.

SatCab Directive

SatCab Directive

The SatCab Directive, or Satellite and Cable Directive, made it so that for every broadcast you would only need copyright licensing in your country-of-origin for it to be broadcasted to the EEA. Since Brexit, the SatCab directive no long applies to UK broadcasters. This means that if you want to broadcast to the EU from the UK you would need to apply for broadcasting licenses for each country in the UK you wish to broadcast to. The loss of SatCab also means that when you broadcast to an EU country your program must meet the local law requirements of the said country even if you've gained broadcasting licenses. Needless to say, without the SatCab broadcasting became a lot more complicated.
